SMCLC Announces Filing of Initiative to Fight Traffic and Limit Development

The SMCLC will soon begin collecting signatures from Santa Monica residents to place "The Residents' Initiative to Fight Traffic" (RIFT) on this November's ballot.

Commercial development typically generates three to four times the amount of traffic as residential projects. "RIFT" will place limits on the amount of annual commercial growth in Santa Monica, cutting roughly in half the rate of new commercial development.

Some projects would be exempt from this "cap", such as schools, hospitals, and other projects vital to our local community.

By limiting annual commercial development to a level that allows a reasonable rate of growth, this measure will ensure that our city has the time to develop the infrastructure to keep pace with future growth. It will prevent the massive over-development of our neighborhoods and ensure that residents have a say in the future of our city.
