Support the Great Park Coalition
Ten years ago, SMCLC joined with other community groups and residents to support Measure LC, to close the Santa Monica airport, which sits on public land, and rededicate that space to park, recreational and educational uses.
In reaction to the overwhelming voter approval of Measure LC, the City negotiated an agreement with the FAA to enable airport closure in 2028. Currently, the City is planning for the future of this public land as part of an ongoing community engagement process. The City is conducting a survey of possible uses for the land that will end on January 5th.
A new non-profit community organization called The Great Park Coalition (GPC) has formed to ensure that there is a community-wide process, that Measure LC informs the process, and that, as our City densifies, the site is dedicated to park uses our community needs, including significant open space and recreational uses. GPC is off to an impressive start: In less than a month, GPC has secured the support of hundreds of people, dozens of community groups, including SMCLC, and numerous public officials.
